So often we hear the wise injunction to “love yourself” but how do we actually do that? We find it so much easier to offer our love and compassion to others while berating ourselves with harsh judgment and cruel criticism that we would never inflict on a friend. Yet our capacity to love and respect ourselves creates the foundation for all our other relationships. We tend to attract relationships with those who treat us the way we feel and think about ourselves.
…the quality of our life depends upon our ability to love ourselves…
So how do we love ourselves and who is it that loves whom? We might imagine one part of our ego-identity telling another part how wonderful we are. But that doesn’t help us. To really know self-love we connect to the loving and compassionate presence of our heart, the common heart, the heart Awareness that is who we really are. We bring that loving presence to whatever we are experiencing. At the same time we also need to create new neural pathways that strengthen our ability to think of ourselves in a healthy way rather than reacting out of our old conditioned thought patterns.
In my experience the quality of our life depends upon our ability to love ourselves, to open to the love of our Divine Self, and to usher ourselves through life’s inevitable challenges with compassion.
